Music Aptitude Tests – UK schools music test info

The Published Admission Number for
year 7 entry is 243 pupils and 24 places are allocated on the basis of musical aptitude.

Stage A: Listening Test. There will be three main tests each on rhythm, melodic memory and listening & awareness. These tests are conducted on an individual basis. Pupils will be marked out of a total of 60 marks according to the accuracy of their
responses. Both stages of each test are held on the same day.

For the second stage aural assessment, students would benefit from regular home practice with our Enhanced Aural MAT Practice Tests, recommended for those students applying to schools that use aural perception including melodic melody, pitch, rhythm and musical awareness tests as part of their music aptitude testing process.

Stage B: Performance. Applicants will be asked to perform one prepared piece on one instrument only or singing. There is no minimum performance length and the maximum performing time allocated is 2 minutes. There are no restrictions on the choice of instrument, voice or style of singing and all instruments are allowed. Instruments other than piano, keyboard and basic drum kit must be brought by the applicant. A grand piano, electric keyboard/piano are available at the test and applicants can also bring their own electric keyboard with adaptor. Marks are allocated on the basis of technique, expression, interpretation, accuracy and fluency.
