Up to 18 Performing Arts Scholarships (10% of the year 7 cohort) are offered each year to pupils who can demonstrate a specific aptitude for instrumental or choral music, dance or drama.
Music Test 1: A multiple choice listening test comprising test sections: Pitch, Rhythm* and the Understanding of Music**. Students achieving the highest scores are invited to the second stage.
*Recommended Resource: For test sections Pitch and Rhythm, students may find our Introductory MAT Practice Tests a useful home training resource. The format is similar to the SMSJ Music Aptitude Test with shaded practice test questions at the start of each test section to ensure students have understood what is required of them before completing each test section. Please note that our Standard MAT Practice Tests comprise 4 test sections: Pitch, Melody, Rhythm and Texture.
**Recommended Resource: For the Understanding of Music (musical awareness and sensitivity tests) relating to Music Test 1 and the aural test for Music Test 2, our Enhanced Aural MAT Practice Tests would be a helpful home training resource.
Music Test 2: An aural test** given to students individually. They will also be asked to perform a piece on their instrument.
